Dialog Axiata PLC, Sri Lanka’s #1 connectivity provider, marked a significant milestone in the country’s 5G journey with the successful completion of the nation’s first Voice over New Radio (VoNR) trial on a live 5G network. Conducted using the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, signifying a fully native 5G voice experience with uninterrupted 5G connectivity.

Building on its pioneering efforts in 5G innovation, Dialog previously conducted a lab-based VoNR Proof of Concept (PoC) in 2023 using a PoC Core setup. Marking a leap forward from the lab-based trial, this achievement was carried out on Dialog’s live 5G Standalone (SA) core network, demonstrating the real-world feasibility of VoNR services.

VoNR delivers clearer voice quality, quicker call connections, and stronger security than older 2G/3G or VoLTE services. In addition, it supports future capabilities like 5G New Calling and improves overall network efficiency through better use of 5G spectrum.

Ranga Kariyawasam, Group Chief Technology Officer of Dialog Axiata PLC said, "This milestone reinforces Dialog’s commitment to driving Sri Lanka’s 5G evolution. Successfully trialing VoNR on our live 5G network brings us one step closer to unlocking the full potential of next-generation connectivity, delivering seamless, high-quality voice experiences over 5G."

This milestone is the latest in a series of 5G firsts by Dialog, which include the region’s first 5G trial network, the first 5G Standalone (5G SA) network trial, Sri Lanka’s first standards-based 5G fixed-wireless pilot transmission, and the achievement of over 6Gbps on its 5G advanced trial network, further demonstrating the capabilities of next-generation 5.5G technology. Dialog remains committed to pioneering technological advancements, accelerating the adoption of next-generation connectivity, and bringing ‘The Future. Today.’ to Sri Lanka.
