Dialog and Central Environmental Authority Expand e-Kunu Programme Across Sri Lanka

Dialog Axiata PLC, Sri Lanka's #1 connectivity provider, announced the expansion of e-Kunu, its electronic waste management programme, in collaboration with the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), to make responsible electronic waste disposal more accessible across Sri Lanka. The announcement also marked the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dialog and the Central Environmental Authority, formalising the collaboration to strengthen public access to responsible e-waste disposal and support environmentally compliant electronic waste management nationwide.

The launch event was attended by Hon. (Dr.) Dammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment; Mr. Anton Jayakodi, Deputy Minister of Environment; Prof. Tilak Hewawasam, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority; Mr. Kapila Rajapaksha, Director General of the Central Environmental Authority; Ms. S. P. Periyapperuma, Deputy Director General (Waste Management), Central Environmental Authority; Supun Weerasinghe, Director / Group Chief Executive of Dialog Axiata PLC; Asanga Priyadharshana, Group Chief Corporate Officer of Dialog Axiata PLC; Hemala Balasuriya, Chief of Dialog Business Services, Dialog Axiata PLC, and senior officials representing both organisations.

Electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in Sri Lanka and poses significant environmental and public health risks when disposed of improperly. Through the expanded e-Kunu programme, households, businesses, schools and institutions can conveniently dispose of unwanted electronic devices at Dialog Customer Care Centres across the island, with all collected e-waste handed over to licensed waste management partners for environmentally compliant treatment and disposal.

The collaboration builds on Dialog's ongoing commitment to responsible electronic waste management while supporting Sri Lanka's national sustainability agenda and the Government's future direction towards implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks. In 2025, Dialog collected 3.74 metric tonnes of public electronic waste, responsibly managed 668 tonnes of internal electronic waste, and recycled 100% of decommissioned network equipment through authorised recycling partners.

Addressing the launch event, Hon. (Dr.) Dammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment, said, "Responsible management of electronic waste is an important component of Sri Lanka's environmental agenda. Initiatives such as e-Kunu help make responsible disposal more accessible to the public while encouraging greater environmental stewardship and supporting the country's transition towards a more sustainable and circular economy."

Prof. Tilak Hewawasam, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority, said, "Responsible electronic waste management requires the collective participation of government, industry and the public. Our collaboration with Dialog strengthens national efforts to promote environmentally responsible disposal practices while supporting Sri Lanka's transition towards an Extended Producer Responsibility framework."

e-Kunu collection boxes are available at 24 Dialog Customer Care Centres across the island, providing convenient collection points for the public to responsibly dispose of electronic waste.
